The word Darjeeling is composed of two words ‘dorje’ meaning ‘thunderbolt’ and ‘ling’ meaning ‘place’ hence the name, ‘the Land of Thunderbolt’.

It isn’t surprising that Darjeeling, Situated in West Bengal, 2000 metres above the sea, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is one of the most famous tourist destinations and also gives a picturesque view of one of the highest mountain peaks in the world (Third highest to be specific), the Kanchenjunga.

Japanese Peace Pagoda – Next to a clock tower is a Japanese temple. 3 kms uphill, is a statue of lord Buddha which is absolutely wonderful and peaceful.

Batasia Loop– This is a place you should visit if you go to Darjeeling. It has a toy train and it is kind of a railway loop. If you are lucky to visit on a day when the weather is clear, you can get a clear view of the dazzling Kanchenjunga and also many streams and falls and a well maintained garden. This is a perfect spot for a nature lover and a photographer..

Tiger Hill– This astounding site is 11 kms away from Darjeeling and if you want to get there, the only possible ways are by Jeep or by foot. It can get tedious but its worth it. I actually felt tears in my eyes just looking at a video on youtube and a few google images. I wonder what the real thing would be like. You can actually see Mount Everest from here and the best time is to visit during sunrise. Don’t forget to pack a lot of snacks and energy drinks. You cannot miss this opportunity. This is literally one of god’s most beautiful creations..!!

How To Get To Darjeeling

The only possible ways to get to Darjeeling is to reach the Jalpaiguri station, Bagdora airport or Silguri and then take scheduled buses, private cabs or jeeps as there is no specific airport or railway station to get there.


Being a famous tourist destination, there are so many hotels you could stay in. Summit Grace Hotel, Hotel Villa Everest and Glenburn Tea estate have good ratings and reviews.

Important Things To Carry

  1. Lots and lots of sweaters, socks and mufflers. This is a place near the himalayas that we are discussing here, hence it is cold always..! It is pleasant around summer time but I am saying this because I cannot stand really cold climate, so you should carry sweaters.

2. Camera, obviously.

3. You might end up shopping a lot, probably a lot of tea, so yeah consider carrying extra bags.
