Mysore is known as the city of palaces and the city of gardens because of the beautiful palace and gardens seen here.
This city, Mysore, which has now been renamed as Mysuru, is one of the most populous cities in Karnataka.
Mysore was the capital city of the Kingdom of Mysore for about six centuries.
It is situated at the base of Chamundi Hills and also happens to be a famous tourist destination.
It is really famous for its sandalwood and many products made out of sandalwood.
Things To Do
Goddess Chamundeshwari is highly worshipped here. There is a story behind this but for now let’s talk about the beauty of this temple. A serene and ancient temple is situated on the hill, the chamundi hills. Periodic buses are available or you can rent a cab. When you reach the top of the hill, you can get a view of the stunning city.
Bull (Nandi) Statue
When you come back from Chamundeshwari temple, take a small detour, you don’t want to miss this one. A dazzling statue of Nandi stands here. Nandi is the vahan (vehicle) of lord Shiva. While you’re there, don’t miss the sugarcane juice, it’s like heaven on earth.
This place is amazing. There is nature, there is fun, colorful lights. Basically its a huge park, on one side there is greenery and walking paths and a few artificial waterfalls which gets lighted up at night. At around 6:30 or 7 at night, everybody crosses a bridge next to the Krishna Raja Sagara Dam to get to the other side where there is a show with a colorful display of lights and music with a water fountain. This park is really well maintained. If you visit Mysore, you can’t not go to Brindavan Gardens.
Mysore Sand Sculpture Museum
I can’t draw proper stick figures on sand, and there are so many great artisans here who have made sand sculptures..!! Hats off to these artists. These sculptures have been made with precision and beautiful detailing. There are sculptures from Mahabharatha, the Egyptian Civilization,Disney, Wildlife and so much more. One should never miss the opportunity to be able to witness such great art work.
Sri Chamarajendra Zoological Gardens
A long walk along the zoo path, watching healthy and active animals while you go, that’s the experience I’m talking about. The Mysore zoo is one of the cleanest and best zoos in the country. Well maintained, proper sitting arrangements , clean drinking water, rest rooms and canteens are available too.
Now the trademark of the city, the dazzling palace of Mysore. The art work inside is spectacular. A majestic monument and an iconic heritage site of India, the palace is awe worthy. Its planning and construction has been applauded by all. At sundown, (on sundays and govt holidays) the palace is lit and it looks even more beautiful than it already is.
How To Get To Mysore
If you live in Bangalore, you just need to catch a train. That’s the easiest way
If you are from Kerala or Tamil Nadu, then you can take a road trip to Mysore and catch the National Highway-212.
There is an airport but there is no commercial service as of now.
The hotels with high ratings and are highly recommended are The Radisson, The president Hotel, The Quorum, Lalitha Mahal Palace Hotel. There are many other hotels with different price ranges to choose from.
Mysore Famous Goods
The Mysore Famous Sandal Soap is something all tourists buy. It is an all natural soap. Other than that, sandalwood oil and incense sticks and so many different things made out of sandalwood are available here. Make sure to buy something that you can keep and cherish the memories you made in Mysore. I still have a bracelet made of sandalwood at home and it smells good even now,its been 3 years now.
Dasara In Mysore
Dasara falls this year (2016) on the 11th of October. It is the state festival of Karnataka and is celebrated with pomp and show . There are processions with musical bands, camels, horses and elephants. Exhibitions are held and there are other programs like dance, drama, singing. Of course the Mysore Palace is illuminated.
Mysore is one of my favorite places to go to on a vacation. Its relaxing and fun. Plan a one week trip to Mysore with friends/ family and have the time of your life.
